Holiday means relaxation, but let's not forget that recharging also comes from treating your senses with a healthy dose of inspiration. Let this chic region just happen to have an abundance of art, design, and architecture, with lots of French flair obviously. Let us share our favorite design addresses in the South of France, where we're bringing a little je ne sais quoi to your aesthetic adventure. Book that roadtrip and get ready to soak up all that Le Sud has to offer.



Avignon


We start our road trip in Avignon, a destination you can't miss on your journey to the south. This city is known for its vibrant arts scene and is quickly becoming a hotspot for contemporary design. Our recommendations:

Collection Lambert

A must-see museum showcasing contemporary art in an 18th-century mansion. Its extensive collection includes works by Cy Twombly, Sol LeWitt, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, making it a cultural treasure.


Atelier Vime

Just outside Avignon in Vallabrègues, this rattan wonderland offers a stunning selection of vintage and contemporary wickerwork, all handcrafted in France. The atelier revives local craftsmanship with beautifully designed furniture and lamps. It's not without reason that it is a favorite among Europese interior designers.





Arles


As we head further south, we find ourselves in Arles, a charming town, but with contemporary appeal because of its rich artistic history and design initiatives.

Le Collateral

Former church turned into cool boutique hotel and art gallery. A satisfying blend of history and modern design. Each room and common area is like a canvas, displaying works from international artists. Their kitchen has locally made products and you take your breakfast on their breezy little roof terrace.


Ou Arles

A treasure trove for design lovers, featuring a curated selection of local and international vintage pieces, owned by designer Julie Barrau.


Hotel Le Cloître

Situated in the historic heart of the city, this chic hotel features rooms designed by the acclaimed Annabel Karim Kassar. Its close location to major attractions combined with its modern aesthetic makes it a top pick for younger visitors.

Hotel L'Arlatan

This 15th-century townhouse has been reborn as a hotel, with each of its 36 rooms uniquely decorated. The vibrant interiors reflect the vision of artist Jorge Pardo, offering guests a colorful and artistic experience.


Marché aux Puces d’Arles

On the first Sunday of each month, this bustling market offers a diverse array of vintage treasures. Take time to explore the charming streets of Arles' old town, especially Rue de la République and Rue de la Calade, for unique boutiques.


Rencontres d'Arles 

During the summer months the renowned photography festival showcases the latest in photographic art, affirming Arles' significant place in the art world.






Aix en Provence


Next, we visit Aix-en-Provence, a city that breathes elegance and artistic heritage, attracting numerous painters throughout history. This picturesque town, with its charming streets and stunning landscapes, became a hub for artists seeking inspiration. Renowned painter Paul Cézanne was born here, and his works often depict the region's beautiful surroundings. Aix-en-Provence's vibrant art scene continues to celebrate its illustrious past and influence on the world of painting.


Fondation Vasarely

This striking architectural marvel, designed by Victor Vasarely, stands as a testament to the Op Art movement. The foundation hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions and cultural events, making it a must-see for art enthusiasts. Its hexagonal structures and vibrant murals offer a unique visual experience.

Château La Coste

Allez, hop dans la voiture to Marseille, make sure to stop by Château La Coste, a unique combination of vineyard, art, and architecture, as the building is designed by the late Oscar Niemeyer. Stroll through the vineyards while discovering works by Tadao Ando, Louise Bourgeois, and other renowned artists.

Our journey continues to Marseille, a harbor city where modernist architecture and vibrant culture meet.

Hyeres

Our next stop is Hyeres, a lovely french town known for its beautiful villas and artistic heritage.


Lilou Hotel

This stylish boutique hotel that has just opened her doors, is offering a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere. It’s the perfect base to explore Hyeres’ artistic and historical attractions.


Villa Noailles

A modernist villa designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens, which hosts various art and design exhibitions throughout the year. Its gardens and avant-garde architecture make it a fascinating visit for design enthusiasts. They also have a nice shop with cool products from collaborating designers.


Villa Cleo

As you travel from Hyeres to St. Tropez, be sure to book ahead at Villa Cleo, an upcoming gem in instagram's fashion & design community. For good reason. This beautiful villa offers a serene escape with stunning views of the Mediterranean.

Saint Tropez

Saint-Tropez, a glamorous icon on the French Riviera, has long been a magnet for artists drawn to its dazzling light and vibrant colors. This enchanting coastal town inspired many painters, including Henri Matisse and Paul Signac, who captured its lively port and charming streets in their works. The idyllic scenery and chic atmosphere made Saint-Tropez a beloved retreat for creatives. Today, it is a paradise for design enthusiasts, bursting with galleries, design dealers, and cool hospitality designs.

Located on the famous Place des Lices, Isabelle Castanier hosts an exhibition here celebrating Provençal art and design. From vintage pieces to contemporary creations by artists like Axel Chay, this is a summer highlight from July 4 to August 24.


Lily of the Valley

A bit out of St. Trop this fabulous hotel in La Croix Valmer is definitely worth the drive. The hotel offers views for days—and we're not just talking about the view on the coastline. The design is just as breathtaking, with a beach club that’s a must-visit. The perfect blend of luxury and comfort makes it a standout destination.






Saint Paul de Vence

Our journey takes us to Saint Paul de Vence, a haven for art lovers. Don't forget to pay a visit to the following design stops:


Fondation Maeght

This renowned museum is set amidst Mediterranean pines and features works by Giacometti, Miró, and Calder. It’s the perfect setting for notable events, including the Jacquemus fashion show of his S/S 24 collection ‘Les Sculptures.’ The foundation's architecture and its integration with the surrounding nature create a unique experience for visitors.


La Colombe d'Or

Well known from the socials, but for a reason. This legendary hotel and restaurant has been a favorite of artists and celebrities for decades. Its walls are adorned with works by Picasso, Matisse, and Léger, making it a living gallery. The charming setting and artistic ambiance make it a must-visit for any design enthusiast.

Cannes

Cannes, summer destination with allure. The city isn’t just for film lovers—it’s also a design paradise.


Palacio Bulles Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin's Palacio de Bulles, located in Cannes, France, is an iconic masterpiece of futuristic architecture overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This bubble-shaped avant-garde residence captures Cardin's unique blend of fashion, design, and innovation in a truly mesmerizing setting.


FAMM (Female Artists of the Mougins Museum)

The first museum in Europe dedicated exclusively to female artists, a space celebrating women's contributions to art. The museum's exhibitions are a tribute to the creativity and resilience of female artists throughout history.


Musée Fernand Leger

Just on a short drive away - the little town Biot is home to another artistic treasure. Dedicated to the works of Fernand Leger, this museum features vast mosaics by Lino and Heidi Melano, making it a visual feast for art lovers. The museum's collection spans Leger’s career, showcasing his influence on modern art and design.

Nice

Our final destination is Nice, where design and history converge beautifully. Nestled on the stunning French Riviera, Nice has historically attracted artists with its radiant light and vibrant landscapes. This beautiful city inspired renowned painters like Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall, who vividly depicted its charming streets and azure coastline. Today, Nice remains a haven for design lovers, overflowing with galleries, design boutiques, and stylish hospitality venues. Don't miss the spots below in the nearby area.

This iconic villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is a masterpiece of modernist design with its sleek lines and functional elegance. Gray envisioned the villa as a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, prioritizing comfort and fluidity in every aspect of its design.


Le Corbusier’s Cabanon

A short distance from E-1027, Le Corbusier designed this cabin as a personal holiday home in 1951. The space is adorned with vibrant murals, and the house has been recognized as a UNESCO heritage site, offering guided tours through Cap Moderne.



Musée Marc Chagall

Designed in 1973 by André Hermant, this museum houses a stunning collection of Chagall's works. The artist himself was deeply involved in the design, ensuring a harmonious blend of architecture and art. The museum's peaceful garden and thoughtfully curated exhibits make it a serene and inspiring visit.
